Debra Apai

Debra is a married mother of five children from Bunsil Siassi Island in the Morobe Province who creates Bilum and Necklaces. Her pieces are extremely connected to her culture and province. Debra makes her Bilum out of a factory-made string and often uses blue, green, white and yellow, as they are the provincial colours of Morobe.

In the same way she uses a traditional rope and nut from a tree which represents her mother’s clan. The beautiful necklaces stem from the idea of a snakes tail and a shell. After learning her skills from her mother and friends in grade three Debra has continued to make beautiful pieces for 42 years. At 52 she now aspires to build a business for her artwork to utilize her ability and creativeness to earn an income to sustain her family’s way of life.
